LHS Sports Hall of Fame 2017
Grant Westerchil
Each year at Homecoming, this year on October 13 and 14, an outstanding alumnus is selected for inclusion into the LHS Alumni Sports Hall of Fame. The honoree this year is basketball player and coach Grant Westerchil, a member of the 1984 LHS graduating class.
As a Wampus Cat, Westerchil earned a three-year varsity basketball letter, 1982-84. His 1982 team finished the season 25-1, and the 1983 team finished 30-4. Westerchil averaged 22 points per game during his senior year and earned a basketball scholarship to McNeese State University.
Westerchil returned to LHS in 1993 as an assistant coach and was named head basketball coach in 1994. During the years as head coach, Westerchil led his team to seven straight playoff appearances, winning five District 4-4a titles and playing in the state finals three times, 1996, 2000, and 2001, winning the state 4a title in 2001.
During those years Westerchil was twice named Louisiana State Basketball Association Coach of the Year in Class 4A.
Westerchil is the last coach at LHS to have won a state title in a team sport. As Coach Rolf Kuhlow won a state championship earlier in Track and Field, that win and the basketball title of 2001 are the only two state titles in team sports in LHS history.
Following the 2001 championship season, Westerchil left coaching but in 2012 returned to his alma mater as a teacher/assistant coach.
Westerchil is married to the former Beth Roberts. They are the parents of Wampus Cat alumni, Skyler LeCroy, Brady Westerchil, and Theron Westerchil.
